Happy Christmas (War is Over): What I Wore

Thirty years ago today, John Lennon was killed hence today's post title, which I totally think counts as a Christmas carol even though it's not a traditional one!

Husband is a huge Beatles fan and I always thought I was too...until we got Beatles: Rock Band. I was shocked when I didn't even recognize half the songs and the few that I did know, I barely knew the chorus, let alone all the words! Husband, on the other hand, was immediately singing and playing guitar like an old pro! Very impressive, Husband!

I do remember always liking this particular John Lennon solo song, especially when all the little children start singing! So sweet!

And so sad!

Hm what do we have here? It looks like something I plucked off our Christmas tree!

One of my Christmas traditions with Husband is that every year I get him a Hallmark ornament. This Lady and the Tramp ornament is the first one I ever got him in 2003. When you pull the heart down, the spaghetti shortens and the two puppies kiss. So cute (although I'm sure I had ulterior motives at the time since I was campaigning pretty aggressively for a dog!) Then Husband committed the most serious of all Christmas-related sins: he threw out the ornament box!

Never throw out a Hallmark ornament box! They are called Keepsake Ornaments for a reason (more on this in my upcoming holiday decorating post)!

ARG!!!

I did finally forgive Husband although I made him swear that he'd never throw out an ornament box again (and luckily for him, he hasn't!)

Every year I have lots of fun picking out an ornament for Husband. In the past seven years, I've gotten him quite a few Disney ornaments (just because those are often the cutest and the most lovey-dovey). But a few years ago, I got him this Bananas for You ornament (featuring our favorite wild animal: the monkey) and last year, I got him this Olive You ornament.

This year, I picked out this ornament (Husband, you'd better not peek! I'm warning you!) There's a story behind it that I'll be at liberty to reveal after Husband opens his present!

Our first Christmas together, Husband was still in "woo-ing" mode so he got me fancy earrings and a necklace. I wish that was a Christmas tradition that he continued! Does anyone else have a Christmas tradition with their significant other?

Happy Wednesday!

  1. I think that is so cute...picking ornaments out for one another. My husband and I do something similar as well. It makes our Christmas tree just that much more special.

  2. This is the first time I've left a comment! I am love reading your blog! :-)

The Hubs and I have been getting each other Hallmark ornaments every year for the last 8 years. We started before we got married, and it is so much fun to pull them out every year when we decorate the tree because they bring back so many good memories. Since we've been married we also purchase an ornament (or several) every time we travel somewhere. Thus, our tree is decorate mainly with sentimental ornaments, which makes it even more special.

  3. I love Hallmark Keepsake ornaments! They are all so darling. My favorite: Statler & Waldof, heckling included.

I wonder if your husband will see that ornament as having implications for his immediate future? I was definitely reading something into it, but that's probably just me!

  7. It's a tradition for me and the hubs to buy ornaments for each other. Of course the kids are included in that tradition now. Our tree is going to be insane with ornaments after a while. I love Christmas ornaments though. I don't think you could ever have too many. Very cute outfit!

  8. I like your outfit, especially the cardigan over the black top! My mom collects Hallmark ornaments, too. She must have ten billion of them, and yes, with all the original boxes.

I remember one of my middle school teachers crying when he heard John Lennon died. Hard to believe it was 30 years ago.

  9. I'm so excited that so many other people collect Hallmark Ornaments! I think they are a wonderful way to commemorate Christmas and yearly memories and I have two bins full of just my ornaments.

And to be clear: I get Husband an ornament every year. He doesn't get me one (although I usually do get a few from my mom and grandma each year). I think exchanging ornaments is a lovely idea and I wish I had thought to suggest it back when we first started dating!

  10. I was in high school when the "Happy Christmas (War is Over)" song came out and local bands played it at our dances and concerts. It was especially significant to us since the boys would soon be eligible to be drafted during the Vietnam War.

Also, I should have posted sooner to partially take credit for Kathleen's love of Hallmark ornaments!

    Cute outfit, too!
